Steep and Cheap.  Go ahead, click on the link.  You’ll probably see some piece of outdoor gear at a crazy amazing price.  It could be a wetsuit, ski goggles, or booties for your dog.  Whatever it is, it won’t be on sale for very long.

I will forever be grateful to my friends Courtney and Jay for introducing me to this site.  Steep and Cheap sells all kinds of outdoor-type gear, but they only sell one item at a time, and it’s never on sale for more than 20 minutes.  When time runs out, the item is gone, and a new one appears in its place.

For people like me that think of REI as a candy store for adults, Steep and Cheap is crack.  The items on the site are always heavily discounted - anywhere from 45% to 95% off retail.  If there is a particular item you’re in the market for and you happen to catch it on Steep and Cheap, you’ve struck gold.

I’ve bought a sleeping bag, a fleece, a sports bra, sunglasses, and a Swiss Army knife from this little corner of internet euphoria.  It’s a fantastic resource for the frequent traveler, even if you’re not planning on shredding slopes or summiting Kilimanjaro.

They do have one small catch, although it’s not a catch at all if you’re an honest person.  They don’t allow the items to be resold online.  So if you score a sweet pair of Oakley sunglasses for $50, don’t throw them up on eBay and try to get $120 for them.  If you’re caught, Steep and Cheap will ban you from the site.  Don’t be that guy.

Steep and Cheap also has a toolbar plugin that you can install if you want to see what they have on offer 24/7.  I did this for a while, but I got ridiculously obsessed with it, and I finally decided it was simply too much temptation and uninstalled it.  But it sure is a nifty feature.

So if there’s something in particular you’d like to bring along on your next trip or you’re just in love with outdoor gear in general, stalk Steep and Cheap for a while.  If you don’t find what you’re looking for, you’ll probably find something that you decide you can’t live without.

  1. I didn't know that Charlie needed booties until I read this. Thanks.

by the way, are you in DC? and do you have pirate items that Charlie can wear for tomorrow's costume contest at the lab picnic?

    this is not a joke.

    1. Oh girl, I just got back from a weekend with little internet access and got this too late! So I'm back in DC now, and I do have some random pirate gear, though I'm not sure any of it would have worked for Charlie! Did you find anything for him
